Repairs

Filson designs its clothing and gear to deliver lasting service, and the repair service exists to keep that equipment where it belongs, out in the field. Whether a button has been torn off or a jacket gets snagged on a barbed wire fence, Filson can often fix the damage.

Repairs are carried out with strength and functionality as the highest priorities. The goal is to extend the life of the product, not to make it look brand new. As a result, repairs are visible and become character marks earned through hard use. Each mark tells a story.

Several repair methods are used depending on the type of damage. For holes and tears, darning is applied. This involves reinforcing the damaged area with stitches around the edge, followed by a strengthening zig zag pattern. For larger repairs, a backing piece may be added. This method often results in a repair that is stronger than the original material. For worn seams and cuffs, binding may be added to protect against fraying. The binding materials are chosen to closely match the original fabric, though exact color matches are not possible due to natural aging and patina.

Panel replacement is reserved for cases of extreme wear. When there is a large area of damage, or when the surrounding fabric has become too weak to support darning, a panel may be replaced entirely. Missing or damaged buttons are replaced with either original buttons or the closest available match. Slight differences in shine or color may be visible. Snaps are replaced using specialized calibrated machinery, and backing material may be added for reinforcement. Vintage snaps with enamel finishes are replaced with modern equivalents. Zippers can be replaced on most garments, though due to construction constraints, zippers on bags cannot be repaired. Filson bags are built with exceptionally sturdy zippers to ensure long lasting service. For luggage, the repairs department stocks hardware for many items that are no longer in production. Original hardware is matched as closely as possible, though slight visual differences may occur.

Filson guarantees every item for its lifetime against failure of materials, workmanship, and manufacturer’s defects. However, some types of damage fall outside this warranty. Similar to how a car warranty does not cover collisions, certain damage may require a modest fee for repair. Chemical damage from contact with solvents, chemicals, or battery acid can weaken or destroy fabric. This type of damage is not covered under warranty, though repair may still be possible. Animal damage from moths, rodents, or pets is also not covered. Non warranty repairs may be possible if the damage is not excessive. Leather requires periodic conditioning to prevent drying and cracking, and damage from neglect is not covered under warranty but can often be repaired. The warranty covers Filson products themselves, not alterations performed by customers or third parties. Repairs to alterations or damage caused by them may be possible as a non warranty service.

Customers can submit a repair request through Filson’s customer service channels. To begin the process, contact filsonofficial@outlook.com or call (231) 325-2357. The repair team will evaluate each item and determine the best course of action, whether under warranty or as a paid service. This commitment to repair and service is part of Filson’s long standing tradition of unfailing goods since 1897.
